Fine Gael's 'Blazing Saddles' election 'strategy'
OR . . Bob Shrum and the 'Power of Dumb'
So a couple of weeks ago I was watching the idiot-box and on came Waterford TD Austin Deasy (he of 'still smoking in the Dail bar' infamy) 'threatening' to call a leadership contest if Fine Gael don't win the next election. (see here)
I sat there thinking 'are these guys serious?' Do they actually expect anyone in their right mind to vote for them as they threaten to dump their leader after they fail in the election? Sheesh!
So, a day later Enda decides to show how tough he is by calling the bould Deasy to heel. I mean, what else could a strong fearless leader do BUT whack Deasy around the head a few times, if only to show the voters that rather than being a a bit of a wet sheep, he was a tough rigid iron-fist type, and quite capable of out-goose-stepping McDowell any day, thank you very much!
Yesterday, the party attempted to play down similar remarks by Waterford TD John Deasy, portraying him as a radical and a maverick.
However, upon more mature reflection I had to come to the concluscion that the whole thing was a ploy, cooked up by the Enda's new (and probably very expensive) U.S. erection consultant Bob Shrum (the guy who couldn't even manage to win an election against the most unpopular U.S. President ever!)
If you click on the Wikipedia link you'll find this gem:
Commentators often point out a "curse" associated with the presidential campaigns that he runs since he has yet to claim victory for any of his candidates in over eight presidential elections.... Interestingly, during Kerry's improbable comeback during the Iowa caucuses in fall of 2003, Shrum was on a 10-day vacation in France
I guess the idea must have been 'Hey, let's show the voters just how tough Enda really is! Let's set up a (fake) leadership threat from the backbenchs, and watch the voters swoon as Enda gets all macho and bitch-slaps Deasy back in line, it'll be a voter-catcher for sure!'
Reminds me of the scene from Blazing Saddles, where the newly-appointed black Sheriff, under imminent threat of lynchin', decides to fool the dumb townsfolk by putting his own gun to his head and saying. . . .
Vote for Enda - or Enda get's it!
think of the kittens, voters, think of the kittens . . .
every time you vote for any one BUT Fine Gael - God kills a kitten
And they paid Bob Shrum good money for this.
What a bunch of . . .
"All right! We'll give some land to the niggers, and the chinks. But we don't want the Irish!" - that's a quote from the film - see the Wiki-link before you complain ;-)
